When talking about the effects of weed in the world of medical marijuana these abbreviations come up a lot: THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol). These terms are the names for the most well-known cannabinoids that are found in marijuana strains. THC and CBD have the same chemical composition but the atoms are just arranged just a little bit differently. They are structurally similar, but each performs a vastly different function.
THC is the psychoactive part of marijuana that gets you high. It’s the reason when you smoke weed that you feel hungry and relaxed. That’s the reason it’s prescribed for patients with conditions that results in lower appetite, like AIDS and Cancer. THC is also responsible for the unfavorable side effects that happen sometimes of marijuana such as anxiety and fatigue. It’s also why marijuana is not recommended for teenagers as it sometimes has a negative effect on long-term memory in growing and developing brains. THC is the part of marijuana that makes you feel less anxious, sleepy, and give you the “munchies”.
CBD on the other hand, is the counter for this and seems to exist to balance out the effects of THC. CBD has zero psychoactive properties. It doesn’t give you the high that THC does nor any of the anxiety or fatigue affects. When you smoke weed, the THC goes to work on your brain and the CDB is there to regulate that so it doesn’t become harmful.
When you hear all about the medical benefits of marijuana, they are talking about CBD. Most medical marijuana is grown and cultivated to have higher levels of CBD in it. Normally it’s about 40% in regular strains, but thanks to modern research, strains with a higher percentage are available. Also when extracted in an oil form it can be applied to food to get the positive effects into the body without smoking it. Since CBD has the opposite effect on the body as THC its been shown to have highly positive results in reducing cancer tumor spread, inflammation, and the mental effects of depression and schizophrenia. So when you hear about “weed oil” know that it’s just the helpful chemical compound found in marijuana extracted into useful way.
Different strains have different levels of THC and CBD. Your local dispensary can help find the best one for your medical needs.Tags: cbd, difference, thc
